A Brief History of Apple's Security
For many years, Apple enjoyed a reputation of being impervious to hackers and other online threats perceived as plaguing Windows. The notion of Apple products having superior security was trumpeted by Apple's marketing team with Apple.com boasting that the Mac "doesn't get PC viruses" and owners didn't need to do anything to safeguard their data1. The inherent irony of this statement is that viruses in fact showed up on Apple equipment years before the IBM PC was affected. Although this claim was rescinded years ago, many device owners and even IT professionals still believe that Apple's security is so superior to the alternatives that there is no reason to bother with security controls.
